Acherontia atropos — Death’s-head Hawkmoth

An unmistakable hawkmoth characterised by its substantial body, mottled brown forewings and brilliant golden-yellow hindwings and abdomen.

Perhaps its most famous feature is the skull-like marking across the thorax, which has given Acherontia atropos its wonderfully macabre reputation and makes it a particularly fitting specimen for this darker natural-history display.
