A striking black stag beetle with a broad, heavily armoured body and distinctive curved mandibles.

The glossy dark colouring of Dorcus alcides contrasts beautifully with the translucent golden-brown flight wings revealed beneath its elytra, offering a rarely seen look at the delicate structures hidden beneath its robust exterior.
